Romeo & Juliet 2021
We are thrilled to be presenting Shakespeare’s tragic love story Romeo & Juliet for our 19th season of Shakespeare in the Vines.
A violent street brawl between rival families the Montague’s and Capulet’s is the prelude to Romeo’s first encounter with Juliet. Despite every obstacle they fall in love. But any plans for their future happiness are cruelly destroyed by renewed violence between the two families. Packed with lyricism, comedy, suspense and drama, Shakespeare’s heartbreaking tale is one of the greatest of all love stories.
“But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun”

400 years ago, Emilia Bassano raised her voice. The world didn’t listen. Who was Emilia? Was she the “Dark Lady” of Shakespeare’s sonnets? What of her own poems? And why was her story erased from history?
In this boisterous, ground-breaking play, Emilia and her sisters call out to us across the centuries. A call to arms that cannot be ignored. With a cast of 13 incredible women who collectively embody diversity rarely seen on our stages – centering First Nations women and including women of all ages, sizes and abilities – Emilia is a riotous ride that leaves audiences breathless.
